I usually hate my job.

I’m a lottery machine operator. Lottery is a big business here in PA. I serve hundreds of customers daily… as well as hundreds of bad attitudes.

It’s a job… not my career so, I cope.

I have to deal with disgruntled rude people all day, and rarely do I get through my day with a smile on my face. Today, a regular customer got in my line. He plays at least a hundred dollars daily, and he usually makes my line stretch because of his excessive spending. He did the same today, peeking over his shoulder to apologize to the waiting crowds behind him.

Midway through printing his book of lottery tickets (fifty cents a ticket… at least 220 tickets) he taps my window and he tells me:

"I want to let you know that you’re the best I’ve ever met. I goto a lot of places to play my numbers and they all have a problem following directions. They can’t keep up. But when I see you, I know I have nothing to worry about. You’re really good at what you do… your focused and you pay attention to detail. I appreciate you a lot. Keep up the good work."

I usually hate my job. But after he left I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. It’s nice to make someone’s day better. That one act of kindness gave me faith that my hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Heres to smiling at work and good customers… Happy Wednesday.
